Pelicans became one of the most captivating parts of the Hilton Head series. I was fascinated by the way they soared low over the waves, then suddenly rose and dove headfirst into the water. These birds felt completely different from the white, easygoing lake pelicans I’m used to seeing in Colorado. They reminded me a little of the difference between black bears and grizzlies—same family, entirely different presence. In this painting, I wanted to capture the experience of them: the speed, the sound of the waves, the flap of their wings, and the way they moved as part of the environment while I stood and watched.
